| IGN recently had a hands on with Bomberman Land. | Quote: | Remember when the Wii was revealed back at the Electronic Entertainment Expo back in May 2006? One of the first third party games that was fully playable at the Nintendo booth was Hudson's Bomberman Land for the system. Whatever happened to that game, huh? Well, Hudson decided to go back and beef up the production and do to the Wii game what the company did for the excellent Nintendo DS version of Bomberman Land Touch! The company stopped by the office to give us a brief taste of the evolved Wii game, currently scheduled for an early 2008 release.
Anyone familiar with last year's Nintendo DS game will find themselves in recognizable territory on the Wii version of Bomberman Land. That's because this game features the same adventure-style presentation where players wander all over the land to successfully complete mini-games and solve puzzles that'll advance them further in the storyline. The game uses the Wii Remote exclusively, mirroring the touch-screen control of the Nintendo DS edition: pointing at the screen and holding the B trigger will make your Bomberman character move around the environment, and tapping the A button will have your character interact with other inhabitants.
Bomberman Land is all about the mini-games, and there are several of them to compete in for the Wii version. In our brief hands-on we encountered challenges where we had to jump a rope hitting the A button in the proper time or trip up and lose the game. Another one used the Wii pointing in a lightgun shooter where we had to blast flying molten rocks flying out of a volcano. One game even borrowed heavily from Capcom's Buster Bros. where you pop huge balloons into smaller orbs by firing up an energy bolt as they bounce around the environment. When the game ships, there will be more than 50 mini-games that can be unlocked.
The adventure's nice, but Bomberman shines in its multiplayer arenas.
Of course, Bomberman is really about the multiplayer, and yes, the game features the addictive arena battle that everyone knows and loves about Bomberman. Four players can compete in a variety of different environments, planting bombs and trying to take out the other guys with their four way blasts. In the Wii version we found a power-up that exploded the fireblast one tile beyond a destroyed brickwall, which means you're no longer safe hiding just behind a brick tile if one of those bombs happens to go off. Just like the game's single player experience, Bomberman Land's multiplayer is controlled with the Wii Remote exclusively, held in the unit's "classic NES" D-pad configuration. It's unfortunate that this game won't support online for worldwide competition - for Internet battles, you'll have to pick up the Nintendo DS version of the game.
There's also a Wii-specific Bomberman design where players compete using only their on-screen cursor. The idea is to pop balloons and score points by dropping bombs onto the Bomberman arena one at a time - all the usual powerups, from the increased firepower to the extra bombs - are in this mode, just modified for the new style of gameplay. We can't say we're a fan of this option, but at the very least it adds variety to the usual Bomberman gameplay.
The final version of Bomberman Land for the Wii will ship in January 2008. Check out some of the new screenshots by hitting the links below. |

| Yes it does look interesting. I only ever briefly played on the Nintendo 64 Bomberman Land, and even then I only played single player. I know some other people who are really looking forward to it though. _________________ Remember to post your reviews in the user reviews section! |

| I don't think you'd be alone, Bomberman really doesn't seem like a hugely popular franchise. _________________ Remember to post your reviews in the user reviews section! |
